Kayak accident victim was mother of SMSU coach

The woman who died in a kayaking accident on Hawk Creek near Sacred Heart was the mother of Southwest Minnesota State University men's head basketball coach Brad Bigler, the university confirmed Monday.

The Renville County sheriff's Office said 55-year-old Diane Bigler-Hagenow, of Newhall, Iowa, likely died from drowning Saturday evening after her kayak overturned.

Officers were sent to the scene just after 6 p.m. after it was reported that Bigler-Hagenow went missing underwater.

Four people who were kayaking with her, including Brad Bigler, were not injured. Officers say she was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.

"On behalf of the university, our thoughts and prayers are with Brad, his wife Heather, and the entire Bigler family," SMSU Director of Athletics Chris Hmielewski said. "The entire Bigler family has been very close to Mustang athletics since Brad came to SMSU.

"We will rally our support as a Mustang family around the Biglers; anything they need we will be there for them at this time," Hmielewski added.

Funeral services for Diane Bigler-Hagenow will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Newhall. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

According to a detailed post on Brad Bigler's Facebook page, the group was kayaking between Granite Falls and Sacred Heart and encountered rough rapids with each boat taking on water. All but Diane Bigler-Hagenow pulled off the river to empty their kayaks out; she continued downstream.

After resuming their trip down the river, Brad Bigler saw his mother's kayak lodged in a tree. He wrote that the waves in the river were about 2 feet high. His mother was able to grab on to a tree branch above the rapids after being thrown from her kayak.

Brad Bigler wrote that his kayak eventually flipped over and he was thrown into the water. He was able to reach his mother and grab onto the branch, which eventually broke, dropping everyone into the water. Other members of the group were able to get Bigler's mother out of the river, and he ran to a deer stand to call 911, his post said. According to Bigler's post, four to five law enforcement vehicles arrived on the scene within minutes. However, they were unable to save Bigler-Hagenow.

SMSU?Director of Alumni Relations Tyler Bowen, who was a neighbor of Bigler's before coming to Marshall, said Diane Bigler-Hagenow liked to kayak and bike and enjoyed the outdoors.

Brad Bigler played basketball at SMSU, and served as a graduate assistant, assistant coach, and interim head coach before being named the permanent head coach in 2010, succeeding Greg Stemen.

5 Ways to Overcome the Delphi Technique in Special Education!

Are you the parent of a child with a disability who receives special education services? Do you wonder if special education personnel are manipulating the IEP team to make predetermined decisions, usually different than what your child needs? Would you like to learn about the Delphi technique and how to overcome it? This article will give you the ammunition and information you need to overcome the manipulation that is part of the Delphi technique, and finally get your child the special education services they need!

The Delphi technique was initially developed so that experts in a particular field would be able to come to a consensus. Over the years the use has been distorted so that now it is being used to pit members of one group against members of another group. This is done by the meeting facilitator who asks all members of the group what their position on the issue at hand is. They find other group members that agree with their position, and manipulate them to turn against the members of the group that do not agree with them. This is an unethical way to get the group to agree to whatever the predetermined outcome was!

This technique is being used in special education to pit IEP team members against parents and any other people that take the parents side.

Below are 5 ways to overcome the Delphi technique for your child?s benefit:

1. Recognize when the technique is being used, and expose it! Take copies of information on the Delphi technique to any school meeting especially an IEP meeting if you suspect that this technique is being used! Exposure is one way to overcome this unethical technique!

2. Always be charming-never at any point become angry! No matter how many personal attacks come or what the facilitator says stay calm! Why? Because if the facilitator or coordinator can get you angry then they look like the victim. By staying calm despite personal attacks will make you look like the victim, and not the coordinator. Other group members may them take your side because it looks like you are being verbally attacked!

3. Stay focused on the issue and your position on the issue. Use my favorite advocacy technique-repeat, repeat, repeat! If the facilitator tries and puts you on the defensive and change the subject keep repeating what your opinion or question is over and over until the facilitator actually answers the question.

4. If the coordinator begins a long dragged out dissertation on the issue listen calmly. They are trying to distract you and get you angry. When the person is finished bring up your opinion or the question again! Stay focused on the particular issue at hand and do not be distracted.

5. It is important to note that if this technique is being used in a larger meeting, say a school board meeting, it will look a little different. If the people that disagree with the meeting coordinator remain calm and keep bringing the subject back to the issue at hand; the person may ask for a break. Stay away from people that agree with you, and do a little spying on the coordinator and their group of people. This tactic will prevent them from sending in spies to your group, so that they can find out what your next step is!

I think the hardest part of overcoming this technique is to not become upset when you are personally attacked in a meeting-IEP or other type of meeting. I have been called names and told that I am stupid for caring and defending children with disabilities rights, to an appropriate education. My feeling is that if they are attacking me they have nothing to counter what I am saying, and I do not let it bother me.

The Delphi technique must be found, exposed and overcome for the good of all children with disabilities!

Immigration law: Another state cracks down on illegal workers

Immigration law signed by South Carolina governor, despite expected legal challenges. New immigration law would make it a felony to create fake photo IDs.

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Gov. Nikki Haley signed changes into law on Monday that grant more power to police to check whether people are illegal immigrants, a move expected to face legal challenges after similar measures met with lawsuits in other states.

The changes in law require police in South Carolina to call federal immigration officials if someone is suspected of being in the country illegally. And it creates a new police force to enforce a law that would also make it a felony to make fake photographic identification for illegal immigrants. People convicted of that felony could face $25,000 fines and five years in prison.

The changes tighten what already were some of the nation's toughest measures to curb illegal immigrantsliving and working here.

Haley, the Bamberg-born daughter of immigrants from India, emphasized her background as she spoke to supporters and opponents at the bill signing.

"As the daughter of immigrants, I want to make everyone aware that this bill has a tolerance to it. ... This is not a bill that pushes one group away for another group. This is a bill that enforces laws," she said.

Legal immigrants "come here, they put in their time, they pay the price and they get here the right way," Haley said. "What we're saying is this state can no longer afford to support people that don't come here the right way and we are now going to do something about it."

Under the changes, police can ask about immigration status after an arrest or traffic stop and can't hold anyone solely on the suspicion that they're an illegal immigrant. It requires officers to call federal immigrationofficials if they suspect someone is in the country illegally.

Haley brushed aside rumblings that the American Civil Liberties Union plans to sue over the law before it takes effect in January. She said she has "a long list of lawsuits that continue to come my way and the more they send lawsuits (it) just reminds me the more I'm doing my job for the state of South Carolina."

State ACLU Director Victoria Middleton said the law invites racial profiling. "And it basically will subject anyone who looks or sounds foreign to discrimination," Middleton said.

The American Civil Liberties Union is suing to block similar laws in Arizona, Utah, Indiana, and Georgia. It is also planning to sue in Alabama.

When the GOP -dominated House gave the legislation final approval last week, House Speaker Bobby Harrell said the state was stepping into a void because the federal government "refuses to effectively support our law enforcement officers by enforcing immigration laws."

South Carolina's illegal immigration law was considered one of the nation's toughest measures when it was first passed in 2008. But legislators have been criticized for failing to put money into enforcing the law. The spending plan on Haley's desk for vetoes now includes $1.3 million toward for the law enforcement unit.

Despite the costs, Haley said the state will save money because illegal immigrants will use fewer services.

Haley said South Carolina is a tolerant state. But "we follow laws in South Carolina and we don't turn our backs on anything that is illegal."

Bill co-sponsor Larry Grooms called illegal immigration a threat to the nation's liberty and freedom that must be eradicated. "They cling together in illegal communities and bring with them drugs, prostitution, violent crime and gang activity," Grooms said in remarks to brought heckles from bill opponents

Julie Smithwick-Leone of West Columbia said Grooms' remarks showed ignorance "that shows how far removed these legislators are from the population and they really don't know who the population is what all they are giving and bringing to our state."

Brett Bursey of the South Carolina Progressive Network opposed the legislation and wondered who would replace illegal immigrant workers now doing work in agriculture. "Who's going to pick our tomatoes, our watermelons and our cucumbers?" Bursey asked

When your phone, camera, or other gizmo takes an unexpected plunge into a swimming pool or toilet bowl, all is not necessarily lost.

Everyone knows that gadgets and water don't get along. But fear not, all may not be lost when your smartphone, digital camera or other tech device takes an unexpected nose dive into the pool or ocean. Resuscitation can still be done with the help of a few key tips.

Although your gut reaction may be to take the battery out of your drenched device, dry it off and try it again, the battery should remain out until it's completely dry to avoid a shortage. Then use a towel to not only dry the battery, but also the area inside the device where the battery sits.

However, resist all temptation to pick up a hair dryer or let the device sit in the sun to help along the drying process. Gadgets need to be dried with still, dry air, not with excess heat.

Drying the device shouldn't stop with just cleaning up the wet areas. Place the device into a covered bowl or container of dry, uncooked rice to soak up all of the moisture from the device. It should sit there overnight in a cool, dry place.

Uncover the container the next morning, remove the device and hope for the best.

"Glee" gets the write around

"Glee" gets some fresh blood.

It's been over two years, and "Glee" is doing pretty well for itself. The first season of the show was nominated for 19 Emmys and four Golden Globes, and breakout stars Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch won two more Globes for the show this year, alongside its award for best television series.

So if it's not broke, why fix it? That's the question that came to mind when it was announced that "Glee" would be getting a writing staff for the first time next season outside the original trio of co-creators and executive producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. The new staff will include the comic book scribe who rewrote "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, as well as "Buffy"/"Angel" vet Marti Noxon and Christopher Guest contributor Michael Hitchcock. Co-producing the show will now be a four-person job, with "Chuck's" Allison Adler added to the mix.

What could be Murphy's motivation behind the additions? Clearly he wants to keep a unified tone to the show, or else writers would have been added already, especially midway through Season 2, which Deadline Hollywood points out "was particularly hectic for Murphy with the first ever Glee tour and the release of his movie 'Eat, Pray, Love.'" But apparently the group was too busy writing their show to hire new writers, which kind of makes sense when you realize how big of a control freak Ryan Murphy really is. He publicly freaks out at bands who won't be on the show and has almost single-handedly (if a little bit heavy-handedly as well) spearheaded an anti-bullying movement for gay teens alongside Lady Gaga and Dan Savage. The guy just doesn't have much time in his day to read your spec script, OK?

But the end of this season may have moved Murphy to take a breather; after all, "Glee" drew more criticism and backseat driving from fans during the second season than it did during the first, with everyone offering ways to "fix" the show. It must have been an exercise in humility for Murphy -- who was used to the unwavering devotion of the Gleek community -- to find that people just weren't enjoying the contrived stories and somewhat clunky plots that propelled his cast to break out in song from episode to episode the way they used to.

But this round of hiring also inspires a new confidence in Murphy, that he knows what kind of show he wants. "Glee" has always aimed for a tone that combined some of Joss Whedon and Christopher Guest (Whedon has guest-directed, and several of Guest's regulars have made their way into the show), and hiring two writers from those camps proves that Murphy isn't too proud to take a lesson from the masters. And what can?Aguirre-Sacasa signal except rebirth?? Murphy is a little like "Glee's" Rachel Berry in that respect: They are both proud, extremely driven and slowly coming to grips with the fact that they can't do it alone.
