This week, the "Dancing With the Stars" contestants paid tribute to the '80s. After last week's underwhelming performances, most of the contestants showed tremendous improvements.
Contestants Who Improved
Atop the leaderboard was J.R. Martinez channeled his Latin roots with a sizzling samba that earned him and Karina Smirnoff a combined score of 28. J.R. is arguably the best all-around dancer in the competition. I'd like to see him take home the trophy, if only to get that permanent scowl off Karina's face.
Neon-green Rob Kardashian has shown tremendous growth in the competition. This week, he stepped it up as a leading man. He and Cheryl Burke landed near the top with a score of 25. While I still think of him more as a little brother than as a sex symbol, he is doing quite well and I hope he sticks around.
David Arquette and Kym Johnson tied Rob and Cheryl for second place. Despite breaking hold, David won the audience and judges over with his tango and hilarious impressions of Len Goodman.
For the first time this season, Chaz Bono actually danced (as opposed to last week when he just ran up the stairs and made boxing motions). "Dance Doctor" Buddy Schwimmer provided some inspiration for Chaz by showing him that big boys could wiggle their hips too. Chaz and Lacey earned a combined score of 21.
Contestants Who Struggled
Too bad we couldn't swap Hope Solo for Chynna Phillips. Glad to see the judges finally giving Hope some constructive criticism (after weeks over overpraising). She landed in the middle of the pack with a score of 24. Still, I could see Hope pulling a "Shawn Johnson" this season, being an athlete who was able to power her way to the top and beat out more graceful competitors.
Nancy Grace has a strong personality. It just doesn't show during her performances. They landed near the bottom with a score of 22. Will Tristan's pretty face be enough to keep them around for another week?
Poor Carson Kressley will probably go home this week. The fashion guru landed at the bottom with a score of 19 (which made me super-bummed)! It's a shame because in a Chaz-free season, Carson's exuberant personality might have been enough to keep him around.
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough fumbled on their "running/Roger Rabbit" move and ended up with a score of 24. I wasn't surprised to see these front-runners struggle this time. Derek doesn't seem to enjoy '80s week. As he tweeted, "Cheers to all the support tonight ... Glad 80s week is over , not my cup of tea .."
