I like many would love to help every stray around, but who can? If only more landlords and homeowners took in strays and rescues, the stray population wouldn't be so huge. I always feel bad to turn someone down, but I have to put my foot down: I can't take in any more animals! I have four now! I also live in an area where many landlords don't allow pets, so even if I took in a stray to foster it, there's little chance I'd find a home for it. Perhaps this area could use an animal sanctuary, but my apartment is certainly not it. And of course, this sentiment doesn't only apply to me-?I hear this from other cat owners as well.
In attempting to learn more about the history of the phrase "crazy cat lady", I've come across several references to The Simpsons character, and several news pieces of the lady with 100 cats in her apartment, or different variations of a crazy cat lady in the news. UrbanDictionary.com defines a "crazy cat lady" as "someone who fills the void of a love life by adopting several cats, naming them after exes who'd done her wrong. " Oh dear. Other than that, I've come across self-depricating blogs with the phrase in the title to describe themselves.
I don't think many of us who own a cat or two can be rightfully called a "crazy cat lady", Yes, we love our pets, but they don't define us. Instead of simply lumping us in with a stereotype, why not just say we're animal lovers? That's a bit more precise. Especially since many of us don't only own cats. There's no "crazy dog lady", or "crazy bird guy". There are animal hoarders, which can rightfully describe some people. But those people need help. As for me, the only thing I ever need from time to time is a nice amount of lint rollers. Perhaps people need to look beyond only what they see right in front of them. I can't change people's minds. But hey you know what? At the end of the day, who cares? I love my guys, they're well taken care of and they're happy, and that's all that matters...
When did I get "cat lady" stamped on my forehead?
