The Skillman Foundation, a voice for?Detroit?children since 1960, is a private philanthropy whose chief aim is to help develop good schools and good neighborhoods for children. The Foundation uses a variety of communications tools to help create a movement for?Detroit?kids, including its newly launched blog,?A Rose for Detroit.

General Summary & Responsibilities:

About the Communications & Technology Department

The Communications & Technology Department is responsible for the Foundation?s marketing and external communications, including its relations with the media, public, and policymakers. The five-person team handles digital communications, including a robust social media and multimedia operation; media relations; print publications; and some event planning and management. The team also provides communications support and advice to the Foundation?s staff and grantee communities.

Team members include: Director, Communications Officer, Communications Fellow, Technology Manager, Assistant, and outside consultants, as needed.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Director of Communications & Technology, the Communication Officer will manage a variety of program-related communications projects. Specifically, the Communications Officer will:

  • Design and execute communications strategies to advance the grantmaking of the Foundation and the work of its grantees;
  • Work closely with individual program staff, grantees, and other stakeholders to develop and carry out these strategies;
  • Develop consistent and clear messaging about Foundation?s grantmaking, and be able to represent the Foundation and its perspective to outside audiences;
  • Create and edit web and social media content, and other copy; and
  • Other responsibilities, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • A track record of success working in comprehensive communications program in a complex and demanding work environment;
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit sector and its role in social change;
  • A results-driven strategic and creative thinker who can manage multiple competing demands;
  • Significant experience in content creation for a multifaceted general audience;
  • An effective communicator and listener with strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • A flexible and versatile team player who is comfortable with changing priorities and work demands; and
  • A passion for the mission of the Foundation, which is to improve the lives of?Detroit?children.
