Have You Considered Tax Breaks for Home Improvements?

Tax season is upon us and Alumawood, manufacturer of patio shade structures, would like to share some of the tax breaks associated with home improvements and energy-efficient products. Most of these improvements increase the energy efficiency of your home while also improving the comfort level.

The tax credits are restricted to primary residences only. Improvements to rental properties, second homes, and vacation homes do not qualify for these incentives. The improvements eligible for tax breaks include, but aren?t limited to:

  • Solar panels used for heating air in the home; panels have solar cells capturing the sun?s light energy and converting it to electricity for the home.
  • Solar-powered water heaters are also eligible. Water heaters can account for up to 25% of the home?s energy consumption!
  • Wind energy systems are turbines collecting energy from the wind and converting it to electricity. The cost of installing wind energy systems is included in this tax credit.
  • Metal or asphalt roofs that have the approved pigment coatings or cooling granules.
  • Energy-efficient heating and central air conditioning units with an advanced, main air-circulating fan (and programmable settings).
  • Adding improved insulation that reduces the home?s heat loss/gain is one of the most cost- effective improvements. Bulk insulation like rolls, blow-in fibers, and pour-in insulation can qualify. Self-installed weather-stripping and air-sealing caulk/spray is also included!
  • Installing energy-efficient exterior windows, doors, and skylights that meet the Energy Star program guidelines qualify for tax credits.
  • Geothermal heat pumps use the earth?s natural ground heat to provide the home?s heating, air conditioning, and hot water.? These systems are extremely energy-efficient and provide a very comfortable home atmosphere.

As listed, there are a few tax breaks for home improvements and products qualifying for credits on your itemized tax return. Alumawood, your manufacturer of patio shade structures, can help you explore the options that are available to you.
