UK 'biorenewables' centre opens

A facility designed to make the UK a world leader in green chemistry has opened at the University of York.
The Biorenewables Development Centre (BDC) aims to bridge the current gap between laboratories and the chemicals industry, say researchers.
The centre, which received ?2.5m funding from the government, was opened by Business Secretary Vince Cable.
Chemicals derived from plants are expected to play an important role in the future as oil supplies decline.
"This new centre will strengthen the UK's position as a leader in the exploitation of high-value chemicals from renewable sources," Mr Cable said.
"It will also help UK companies to access and capitalise on the global growth potential from these new technologies and products."
The centre's director, Joe Ross, said the facility aimed to help industry make the transition from petroleum-based chemicals to renewable feedstocks.
"At the University of York, we have had two centres - one based in biological sciences, the other in chemistry - that are doing a lot of R&D within what we call biorenewables, so using plants or microbes to make useful stuff," Dr Ross told BBC News.
"Over recent years, we have realised that we need to have a centre that allows us to scale-up that process. And the result is the BDC."
Peel sessionDr Ross explained that the new hub would also help overcome a number of hurdles that could be preventing the wider uptake of green chemicals.
"We need to be able to demonstrate that you can take things that people may still consider to be unreliable or unpredictable feedstocks and use them within supply chains in a way that is going to be acceptable to industry," he said.
"As well as a technological barrier to get over, there is also - to some extent - a psychological one too.
"I think what this centre does is that it effectively removes the risks from that process - for both large and small companies."
One example of the centre's projects involves working with orange juice producers to extract a compound called limonene from orange peel.
The compound in the skins, which are currently going to landfill, can be used by confectionary manufacturers to modify the taste and texture of chocolate.
"What we are trying to do is see if there are valuable chemicals within that orange peel that can be utilised and make the whole process more viable," Dr Ross observed.
"This is a good example of where you can take a large-volume waste product and start to identify chemicals that you can draw out from it.
"Many companies are interested in looking for and identifying alternatives to petroleum-based chemicals."

WOODY: College football playoff system is just more of the same
Soon, our long national nightmare with the Bowl Championship Series will be over.
After the 2013 college football season, the BCS will be but a bitter memory.
Then the new national nightmare can begin ? the four-team national championship playoff system.
Those of us who have railed against the BCS are supposed to be thrilled. A playoff system! At long last, reason and sanity have prevailed!
But the emperor has no clothes. This is nothing more than an expansion of the BCS system with a selection committee replacing the convoluted, nonsensical polls and computer ranking methods.
"A four-team playoff doesn't go too far," said Virginia Tech president Charles W. Steger. "It goes just the right amount."
With all due respect to Steger and his colleagues who approved the new system, a four-team playoff doesn't go nearly far enough.
Four teams? OK. Who do you like after the two Southeastern Conference teams destined to be selected each year?
Consider this scenario in 2014 or beyond. Injuries to key players cost Virginia Tech and Virginia consecutive losses to Duke and Maryland.
The key players return. Virginia Tech and Virginia get so hot they obviously belong among the top four teams in the country. But with two bad losses, the selection committee ranks the Hokies and Cavaliers seventh and eighth.
Bye-bye national championship dreams.
Still think a four-team field is the answer?
Of course it isn't. At least eight teams should be included.
The new system, with its selection committee, has been compared to the men's NCAA basketball tournament. But there is a huge difference. In college basketball, underdogs have a chance, as shown by George Mason, Butler and VCU.
In this new football playoff world, four elite teams will be selected, and we know such programs as Boise State, Brigham Young and Houston rarely, if ever, will be among them.
But if Nebraska runs the table in a watered-down Big Ten, hello Cornhuskers in a national semifinal game.
The playoff games will not begin until Dec. 31 or Jan. 1 of each year, leaving the monthlong layoff between the end of the regular season and postseason in place.
No other sport at any level operates with this kind of rust-inducing gap. And please don't mention encroachment on academic commitments and exams as the reason. Don't mention bowl games, either.
College athletics ceded academic integrity arguments when football and basketball teams began playing on almost every night of the week. College baseball teams play 50 to 60 games in three months, costing these student-athletes countless hours of class and study time.
Academic issues seem to matter for football teams only in December and January, when classes aren't even held for at least half those months.
Bowl games have lost importance ever since the BCS title game was created. Even with this faux playoff system, the significance of bowl games will continue to decline.
Unless the college presidents come to their senses before a television deal is cut, we will be stuck with this new albatross for 12 years. Any effort to expand the field will be met with the usual obstinate arguments by coaches, who will claim the four-team symmetry is perfect.
In a way, they will be correct. It does a perfect job of keeping championships, power and money among a select few.

Meanwhile, the professional fireworks display is an exercise in pomposity, aggression, triumphalism, and hubris. The pyrotechnician?and, more importantly, his patron?intends to ornament the night sky beyond the powers of God himself. He means to inspire awe for little purpose other than to demonstrate his power. The first great fireworks nuts in the Western world were Peter the Great (who put on a five-hour show to celebrate the birth of his first son) and Louis XIV (who, with a specially equipped sundial, used them to tell time at Versailles). Fireworks are imperialist and, as we used to say in school, hegemonic. That they are popularly believed to be populist entertainment does not say much for the populace.

Elders React To Skrillex And Dubstep Music, Are Mostly Horrified (VIDEO)
It's a tale as old as time: The kids discover a new genre of music, and the older generations just don't get it. From rock and roll to hip hop, the music blowing up the charts often just doesn't register when it enters the ear holes of senior citizens.
And dubstep is no exception. The bass-heavy, robotic-sounding dance music popularized most notably by the artist Skrillex is an unmistakably visceral experience, and its popularity is baffling to many fans accustomed to more traditional pop music.
In this video, The Fine Brothers, who are behind the "Elders React" series, play three Skrillex tracks -- "First Of The Year (Equinox)," "Bangarang," and "Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites" -- to some members of the 50-and-up crowd. Their reaction is about what you may think: that it sounds "like a monster" and that it's "not exactly Sinatra." Although plenty of them are equally as delightfully bemused as baffled.

Mumbai attack legacy hangs over India-Pakistan talks

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Rivals India and Pakistan agreed on Thursday to press on with talks aimed at normalising relations, seeking to repair ties shattered by a militant rampage in Mumbai four years ago that New Delhi says were orchestrated from Pakistan.
Indian foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai and Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani however said differences remain over the attack investigation after two days of talks in New Delhi. The talks were held within days of the capture of a man accused by Indian police as a key plotter of an assault that killed 166 people.
India had suspended most ties with Pakistan after the attacks, but has moved to restore trade and other links in the past year while pressing Pakistan to track down members of the suspected organiser, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant group based in Pakistan.
Mathai described the talks as "purposeful and forward-looking" while adding that Pakistan could do more on the investigation of the attacks.
"Bringing to justice those guilty of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, will be the biggest confidence-building measure," Mathai told a media conference at the end of the talks on Thursday.
Jilani repeated an offer to jointly investigate the attacks, but also rejected repeated accusations by Indian officials that Pakistan's security agencies were involved.
India has specifically called for Pakistan to handover LeT founder Hazif Saeed, whom it considers the attack mastermind, and who the United States has announced a $10 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
