WIMBLEDON, England (AP) ? A day after Rafael Nadal's stunning exit at Wimbledon, the only other men who have won the tournament since 2003 ? six-time champion Roger Federer and defending champion Novak Djokovic ? found themselves trailing far-less-accomplished opponents, too.
Here we go again?
Not quite.
Federer sure came close to following Nadal out the door, though. The owner of a record 16 major trophies, and a quarterfinalist or better at 32 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, the third-seeded Federer dropped the first two sets against 29th-seeded Julien Benneteau of France, then was two points away from losing six times, before coming all the way back Friday to pull out a 4-6, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-1 victory in the third round.
"Oh, my God, it was brutal," Federer said. "The thing, when you're down two sets to love, is to stay calm, even though it's hard, because people are freaking out, people are worried for you. ... You don't have, obviously, many lives left out there. You just try to play tough and focus point for point. Sounds so boring, but it's the right thing to do out there."
He should know.
This was the eighth time in Federer's illustrious career that he overcame a two-set hole, including against 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the French Open quarterfinals 3 1/2 weeks ago.
"Mentally, he's a rock. He's two sets down and he doesn't show anything. And after that, if your level is a little bit lower ? right here, right now, he takes the opportunity," said Benneteau, whose cramping thighs were massaged by a trainer during two final-set changeovers. "At the beginning of the third set, I was not as good as I was in the first two sets, and in 5 minutes, it's 4-0."
Actually, that took about 10 minutes. Still, it hardly was the last key moment. With Federer serving while down 6-5 in the fourth set, Benneteau hit a forehand winner to get to 15-30, putting him two points from the upset. Federer hit a forehand winner that made it 30-all, still two points away for Benneteau. The game had two deuces, too ? each one placing Benneteau that close again. But Federer held there, the crowd roaring with each point he won.
"I appreciate their support for so many years out here," Federer said. "Tonight was special."
In the tiebreaker, Federer was two points from being gone at 5-all, then 6-all. But on the latter, a nine-stroke exchange ended with Benneteau netting a backhand. That gave Federer his second set point ? he already had wasted three others in the second set ? and a powerful forehand forced a Benneteau forehand error. Federer jogged to his chair, showered with a standing ovation.
That was the beginning of the end for Benneteau, and it allowed Federer to avoid the sort of surprise that befell the second-seeded Nadal, whose five-set loss Thursday night to the 100th-ranked and previously unknown Lukas Rosol was still reverberating around the All England Club.
"You cannot take for granted anybody. You can't underestimate any opponent. I don't think Rafa did," said the top-seeded Djokovic, who faced Nadal in each of the previous four Grand Slam finals, winning at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open, before losing at the French Open.
"It's Wimbledon. Everybody wants to come up with their best game, especially when you're playing one of the top players, one of the favorites," Djokovic added. "You have nothing to lose."
Like Federer and Nadal, Djokovic fell behind against someone he was expected to beat easily: The Serb ceded the first set, getting broken at love by No. 28 Radek Stepanek, Rosol's Davis Cup teammate for the Czech Republic. But quick as can be, Djokovic turned things around, breaking Stepanek to begin each of the next three sets for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 victory that moved him closer to a semifinal showdown against Federer.
Once Djokovic had Stepanek's serve-and-volley style measured, the passing winners and shoetop-high returns started flowing. Talking about falling behind in the second set, Stepanek said: "Not a good move from my side, because once you get these top guys going, then it's tough to stop them."
Benneteau might have sounded the same lament. For quite a lengthy stretch, he played positively Rosol-esque tennis: hard serves and stinging groundstrokes directed at lines. No fear.
But Federer found an opening and barged through, saved in particular by this: He won 63 of the 80 points he served over the last three sets.
Both Djokovic ? who takes on unseeded Viktor Troicki in an all-Serbian matchup Monday ? and Federer ? who begins Week 2 by meeting 2002 Wimbledon semifinalist Xavier Malisse ? found it odd to be playing with Centre Court's retractable roof closed as a precaution, despite a blue sky overhead.
"That's a bit of getting used to. Indoor grass is not something we're quite familiar with," Federer said.
Here's what happened: A drizzle delayed the start of play Monday, so tournament officials decided to shut the roof. By the time it was closed, and Djokovic headed out to play, the sun was out.
"I was a little bit surprised, when I saw sunshine, that the roof is closed," Djokovic said. "Obviously, they're relying on a forecast that I don't think is very reliable here."
Among those moving into the fourth round on outdoor courts: Denis Istomin, the first player from Uzbekistan to make it that far at any Grand Slam tournament, No. 18 Richard Gasquet, No. 26 Mikhail Youzhny and No. 31 Florian Mayer. Unseeded American Sam Querrey, still working his way back up the rankings after right elbow surgery a year ago, finished off a suspended second-round match, eliminating No. 21 Milos Raonic of Canada 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 7-6 (8), 6-4.
Seeded women who won included No. 1 Maria Sharapova, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska, No. 8 Angelique Kerber and No. 15 Sabine Lisicki. Four-time major champion Kim Clijsters got through when No. 12 Vera Zvonareva, the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up, quit in the second set because of what she said was a respiratory infection, while 145th-ranked qualifier Camila Giorgi of Italy defeated No. 20 Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-3, 7-6 (6).
All rather ho-hum, really, when compared to Nadal's loss and Federer's near-loss.
Benneteau has zero tournament titles to Federer's 74, and only once has made it to a Grand Slam quarterfinal (which he lost, by the way, at the 2006 French Open). Ranked 32nd, Benneteau was attempting to become the first man outside No. 30 to beat Federer at a major tournament in more than nine years.
"He proved he is great. The greatest," Benneteau said. "Technically, physically, mentally, he was exceptional."
They've known each other since they were kids on the junior circuit, and Federer credited Benneteau with having played "a wonderful match, from start to finish. ... Could have ? or should have ? gotten me."
Rosol did get Nadal and instantly became something of a curiosity: A player no one had ever heard of before Thursday was a big deal on Friday.
His buddy Stepanek likened the brash Rosol's performance against Nadal to a gambler getting paid time after time at the roulette table.
"If you put a million on red yesterday, it was there every single time," Stepanek said. "He was just swinging, swinging, and, you know, it was very impressive."
A little more than 12 hours after pulling off as shocking a result as tennis has seen in years, Rosol was back in action, albeit under far different circumstances.
Instead of the tournament's 14,979-capacity main arena, Rosol was a short walk away at 318-seat Court 15. Instead of facing 11-time Grand Slam champion Nadal in singles, Rosol teamed with Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan against James Cerretani of the United States and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France in a second-round doubles match between unseeded pairs.
Normally, a matchup like theirs might be watched by friends, family and some fans mainly interested in a place to sit. Given Rosol's newfound notoriety, though, the place was standing-room only; some spectators sought out spots at adjacent Court 14 and watched from there as Rosol and Kukushkin lost in five sets.
Now everyone will be eager to find out how Rosol fares Saturday in singles on Court 12 against No. 27 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
"I'm curious to see how he's going to play tomorrow. ... To me, he looked a little bit arrogant out there, so I wonder how he'll react in his next match, if he can stay grounded," Clijsters said. "You can beat Nadal, but if you lose the next round. ..."

Wounds from history heal slowly in Asia. Yet, despite pervasive resentment against Japan's control over their country in the early 20th?century, South Korea now looks ready to move forward to establishing closer security relations with its eastern neighbor.
The South Korean government gave the nation a shock on Wednesday. It announced the approval of a landmark decision to sign a new military agreement with Japan.
The General Security Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) would allow the two counties to pass classified military intelligence to one another directly, improving cooperation and consensus amid Northeast Asian security crises.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura confirmed on Wednesday that negotiations between the two countries would soon be concluded. By Friday, South Korea's Ambassador to Japan, Shin Kak-soo, could be sitting down with Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba to put the pen to the new pact.
South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the Korean Cabinet finalized the decision on Tuesday.
Follow us
The GSOMIA has long been pushed by Japan and South Korea's mutual ally, the U.S., to improve military contacts and intelligence transfers between Seoul and Tokyo. Previously, the U.S. had served as something of a middleman for intelligence that moved between the two countries.
Incentives for the new agreement are largely seen to have come from diminishing tolerance in both countries for North Korean provocations and rising concerns over China's military growth.
The North Korean government followed the announcement by making a statement saying the government of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak was "selling the nation out."
That was a sentiment which many South Koreans themselves echoed. Members from 48 civil society groups gathered to protest the decision outside of government offices. The short span between the approval and public disclosure has led opposition politicians and activist groups to harshly criticize the government.
Japan and South Korea remain embroiled over divergent interpretations of their recent past. Koreans remain deeply emotional over the annexation of the Korean Peninsula by the former Japanese Empire, from 1910 to 1945. Coupled with ongoing territorial disputes between the two over the Dokdo Islands (which South Korea administers, but Japan calls Takeshima and says belong to its Shimane Prefecture), historical memories and national narratives of past Japanese oppression leave many Koreans wary of a close diplomatic relationship.
No surprise then, that some called the new agreement an implicit absolution of war crimes committed by Japan during WWII, including forced sexual slavery of "comfort women" by Japanese army officers then stationed in Korea.
The Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, an activist group which seeks to publicize wartime abuses of women, issued a response to the government saying that it had "insulted the victims of sexual slavery."
The leader of the opposition Democratic United Party told Korean news angencies that the Cabinet had broken an earlier promise to consult the National Assembly (legislature) before making their decision.
In 2006, after learning that Japan prepared to send oceanographic vessels to survey the area around the Dokdo islands, the government of then president Roh Moo-hyun announced that it would send 20 armed ships to the area to stop any trespassing Japanese vessels. That spat was only six years ago -- and that indicates how effective pressure from a changing balance of power in East Asia has forced both governments to begin working past their differences.
Nevertheless, President Lee's New Frontier Party will now face closer scrutiny over the issue of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA). That agreement could further strengthen Korean-Japanese defense relations by allowing for exchanges of military equipment (except combat arms and weapons). The ACSA could allow Japanese troops to enter South Korean territory (with invitation), something that hasn't taken place since the end of WWII.
A formal alliance between the two countries remains largely wishful thinking. Nevertheless, American policy makers increasingly see a trilateral relationship as the key to securing Northeast Asia as the U.S. executes its "pivot" to an Asia-centric strategy.
"We welcome closer ties between our allies, Japan and the Republic of Korea," said the U.S. State Department on Wednesday.

?Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter? is a guilty pleasure; ?Brave? disappoints.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
My fellow film critics and I tend to use previous films of a similar genre to compare and contrast the worthiness of the latest entry in that genre. However, when your film is titled Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, there isn?t much hope of finding a similar effort for a side by side comparison. After all, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is still in production, and, like this film, is based on a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote the screen adaptation of his novel.?
Then it hit me. A standard historical drama that has a head-on collision with the utmost silliness and tries to play it straight; darn if that doesn?t describe last summer?s Cowboys & Aliens. Unfortunately, that film was a badly written mess, while Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is oddly endearing.?
Chalk this up as a guilty pleasure thanks in large part to the excellent visual imagery provided by director Timur Bekmambetov, the Russian-Kazakh film director known for two cult vampire Russian movies, Night Watch and Day Watch, as well as his action-packed American film debut Wanted. His vampires? mouths look like piranhas going in for the kill rather than the tame fangs we?ve come to expect from the Twilight series and the like.?
The other element that keeps us engaged is the excellent title performance by Brit Benjamin Walker. His Abraham Lincoln is but a boy when he is traumatized by the death of his mother. His initial foray into vamp hunting as a young man is based on a thirst for vengeance. He doesn?t know his mother?s killer, Jack Barts (Marton Csokas), is of the living dead variety until he finds out a bullet in the brain won?t kill the blood-sucking freak.?
Lincoln manages to escape thanks to help from a devoted vampire killer named Henry Sturges (Dominic Cooper), who takes him under his wing in true Karate Kid fashion showing him how to wield an ax for maximum vampire killing power.?
Why this works is that the story outside the vampire zone sweet spot is played straight and with some heart. His courtship of Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is understated and effective, and his decision to go into politics seems like a reasonable day job to go with his night job.?
Director Bekmambetov creates truly unusual action sequences ? a showdown between Honest Abe and Barts in the middle of a horse stampede is particularly inventive. But beyond the director?s inventive technique when it comes to vampire action, the film works because this version of Lincoln, despite his secret obsession, still feels like the president we revere from history, a true hero who believes in what is right, and that includes freeing slaves and slaying vampires.?
Yes, I just wrote that last sentence with a straight face.?
?
Not So ?Brave??
The latest Pixar animated adventure is Brave, set in medieval Scotland. The film was considered a risk since the animated heroine is a willful teenage girl Merida (voiced by Boardwalk Empire?s Kelly MacDonald), the idea being young boys would not be interested. The success of The Hunger Games perhaps squashed the notion that a young girl with archery skills would be a turn-off. However, what is a turn-off is the petulance of our heroine, in particular something she does to a family member (being vague on purpose so as not to spoil the twist) that makes her far from brave, it makes her selfish and petty. These are not characteristics one wants in a heroine we are expected to champion. The film features the gorgeous animation we would expect from the talented Pixar animators, but the story dampens the effectiveness of those visuals. ?

A t present, Modern Home Furniture designs can be inspired by numerous factors including the ideas propagated by the legendary German school of arts and architecture the Bauhaus school. The unique and highly innovative architectural abilities of the school is directly associated with the creation of the Bauhaus Furniture.
Other ideas behind the invention of Contemporary Furniture include creativity derived from attributes of the physical environment and the need to satisfy the immediate demand. Some of the reasons which make people investing in modern home furniture include:
Quality assurance
Even though Bauhaus furniture draws its standards from a renowned school of art and design, the cost price remains well within reach of most people. The brand defies the odd by confirming that quality products can also be acquired for cheaply.
Bauhaus furniture represents a sense of style and exquisiteness. For quite a number of years, the brand has been modified to adapt to the changing times for the sake of remaining relevant in terms of quality and suitability. Due to its ever excellent standards and ability to go with taste and preferences of individual clients, Bauhaus has won accolades as one among the best modern home furniture of our time.
Saving on expenditure
Since most modern home furniture constitute a number of designs and colors, they help people save on the budget meant for decorating their individual rooms. A room that is fitted with modern home furniture doesn?t require being decked with expensive decorative materials to appear attractive. The furniture you choose will be sufficiently adequate to complement the room?s structure and bring about a feeling of satisfaction.
If you aren?t sure of how the furniture can be arranged to bring about the desired effect, you can hire an experienced interior designer to help with the overall set up. However, you can do it on your own to avoid incurring unnecessary expenditure. Usually, contemporary furniture designs can be arranged without causing unnecessary problems.
Easy to locate
Modern home furniture is easy to locate and own since many dealership shops are now selling them. Unlike in the past few decades, you don?t have to travel many miles to purchase your furniture of preference from a physical shop. All you need is to visit your preferred online stores and browse on the available selections. After locating your furniture of choice, from any part of the world, you can initiate the shipment process with a simple the click on a button.
Wide variety of Bauhaus furniture
More than ever before, online stores consist of a wide variety of Bauhaus furniture that you can use to decorate and fit a room with. Availability of a wide range of modern home furniture allows potential buyers to enjoy price variations. Depending on individual standards that grace each piece of Bauhaus furniture, you will be able to save some money by buying in accordance to your tastes and financial capacity.
The availability of many furniture manufacturers and dealership stores in both physical and online marketing place plays an important role in ensuring your individual taste and preferences are met to details. You should therefore seize the moment while stock lasts.

Country crooner Timothy Michael Poe, the Army veteran who made headlines after he exaggerated his military record on "America's Got Talent," is now out of the running on the reality competition.
We're sure this made some people happy. Country crooner and former soldier Timothy Poe won over America's hearts after his initial audition for "America's Got Talent" when he shared that he was injured in combat, but quickly lost credibility when his injuries couldn't be proven.
And although many viewers were bothered to see Poe continue with the show, they won't need to worry about that any longer.

Poe sang George Strait's "The Chair" on Tuesday night's episode in hopes of being one of the top 48 to move forward with the competition, but the judges didn't let that happen.
But it wasn't the controversy surrounding Poe's claims that caused his dismissal.

Tuesday night's elimination was filmed last month, before people started questioning what really happened in Afghanistan, so it was strictly based on his performance.

From The Royal Gazzette?..
The most important tools in combating childhood obesity?
Positive school attitudes and a physical education programme are vital, according to American researcher Margaret Demment.
The doctoral student at Cornell University will speak on childhood obesity this week, part of a lecture organised by the Bermuda Diabetes Association.
?I came into the nutrition programme at Cornell interested in the influences of food on the health of individual communities and families,? said Ms Demment, whose dissertation focuses on obese and overweight children in rural and urban New York.
?I was looking at the broad spectrum. The more I observed the more I learned how important an issue obesity is for [the United States]. I became specifically interested in preventing obesity in childhood.?
Research showed trends suggested a strong correlation between a family?s socioeconomic status and childhood obesity, particularly minority children, she said.
?What I wanted to look at was how changes in low income over a child?s lifetime impacted their risk of obesity. I wanted to look at children who were downwardly mobile.?
The researcher found children whose parents had lost jobs or divorced were at a greater risk of obesity than they had been before crisis hit the family.
?There is still a lot of research that can be done to look at connections between low income and overweight and obesity,? she said. ?It could be that parents are more stressed for time and resources. It could be that the easier and cheaper food options tend to have a lower nutrient quality and are more calorie-dense.?

Two of us from busythings went last Monday to the Rethinking ICT conference organised at Winchester House School by its head of ICT, Chris Leach.
Some great stuff.
100 or so primary and secondary ICT teachers agonising over whether their subject needs rebranding. This after the Royal Society had declared that the term ICT switches children off and should be abandoned. Even more, the subject itself, which in too many schools has been reduced to teaching ?how to use office software?, should be disaggregated into Computer Science (the rigorous study of programming languages, algorithms etc) Information Technology (the use of computers in science, industry, the arts and elsewhere) and Digital Literacy (the general ability to use computers ?the RS would have us write this in lower case because it is a mere? skill rather than a proper academic subject).
Much discussion, but not a lot of agreement ? some arguing that the refocus on Computer Science and Information Technology should be signalled by a change of name (Computer Science, Digital Studies), others saying that the name ICT should be kept (anyway, nobody knows what acronym ICT actually stands for) and attention concentrated instead on what?s in the tin, rather than what?s on the label.
We sensed a general welcome for Gove?s decision (picking up on the criticisms of the RS, Next Gen, Ofsted and others) to ?disapply? the ICT programmes of study across the board from this coming September, while its content and place in the proposed new National Curriculum were still under review. This amounted to the declaration of an open season for curriculum designers. We heard about Naace?s new curriculum framework, as well as Computing at School?s draft of programmes for KS2 and KS3 which shows how Computer Science could be integrated into the existing structures. So it looks as if there has been a lot of constructive thinking about how specialist ICT teachers (as well as generalist teachers with ICT skills) can bring Computer Science in from the cold and so help enthuse the next generation of programmers without threatening the commitment to enable all children to become literate (or ?wise? ? Naace?s word) users of rapidly developing digital technologies. Add to this the abiding problem of persuading digitally challenged colleagues to take up the cause (apparently a sore point with some of the contributors) and it seems that ICT enthusiasts have a lot on their plate.
As members of a (small) team of software designers and developers who have come to the job from a variety of educational backgrounds (in fine art with virtually no computing, graphic design with some, and computer science with more than enough) we found this whole debate about how ICT should figure in schools well worth listening to. We were also much taken with accounts of two projects that encourage children (and their teachers) to become creative ICT users. Julia Skinner?s ?100 Word Challenge? asks children to produce a short piece (?just a 100 words?) of creative writing in response to picture and word prompts. Their work is posted on their class blog, linked to the 100WC.net website and commented on by other children and volunteer adults. Doing this gives children the experience of becoming published authors with an appreciative, if sometimes politely critical, readership. Equally interesting is the Digital Leaders project which invites children to volunteer to take over (under supervision) some of the tasks that routinely fall on the shoulders of ICT coordinators ? an ingenious way of shedding some of the load while giving a children the opportunity to upgrade their skills and become involved in the management of what they are doing.
Most of the discussion was concerned with the ?higher? end of ICT teaching and learning in schools ? with later primary and secondary education. We would have liked to have heard more of people?s views on how, and how early, children should begin their ICT education. We all know that many 5 year olds are digitally active if not yet digitally wise. Ever since the introduction of the National Curriculum, progammes of study for ICT (initially called IT) have been operative from the age of 5 onwards. The recent critics of ICT have concerned themselves with the whole age range from 5 to 16.The RS while stating that ?every pupil at key stage 2 and key stage 3 should have the opportunity to learn material that is recognisably Computer Science? also says that ?every child should have the opportunity to learn concepts and principles from Computing (including Computer Science and Information Technology) from the beginning of primary education onwards ?? So the question of what 5 or 6 year-olds ought to be doing with ICT and what they ought to be learning about it is a very live issue in which we as publishers of early years and KS1 software take an active interest.
Sadly, the new Early Years Framework has little to say on this issue. If anything it took a step backwards ? dropping the Early Learning Goal for ICT that had been included in the original Framework that it replaces. True, ICT still figures in the supplementary Development Matters guidance for the early years but this only the sketchiest of help to Reception class teachers who want to find ways of responding to their children?s awakening interest in digital technology.
More useful are the self-help initiatives of a number of ICT teachers and coordinators. The Conference grew out of the efforts of its organiser Chris Leach to devise a curriculum that would serve the needs of his prep school which teaches ICT as a separate subject for all year groups from Year 8 down to Nursery. Another innovator we have been following for some time is Ian Addison, a primary school ICT Coordinator who spoke about an ICT planning aid he developed for the teachers in his school and is now making public. This gives an overview of the tools that are available to Foundation Stage and Primary teachers and shows how they can be used across the curriculum to help achieve learning targets set for successive year groups.
We have come away from this very lively conference convinced that if there is to be some sort of marriage between computing as a set skills and computer science as an academic discipline this is how it will be brokered ? through the efforts of those who teach day-to-day and have what one speaker confessed openly to ? a passion for the subject. If the union is brought about what name will the happy couple live under? We have yet to see, but for better or worse it will be decided when the National Curriculum Review publishes draft programmes of study later this year. Gove has promised that the new programmes will not be restrictive:
?Disapplying the ICT programme of study is about freedom. It will mean that, for the first time, teachers will be allowed to cover truly innovative, specialist and challenging topics. And whether they choose a premade curriculum, or whether they design their own programme of study specifically for their school, they will have the freedom and flexibility to decide what is best for their pupils. Teachers will now be allowed to focus more sharply on the subjects they think matter ? for example, teaching exactly how computers work, studying the basics of programming and coding and encouraging pupils to have a go themselves.?
All in all an enjoyable and instructive day ? even for non-teachers like us.

JPMorgan is improving risk management by boldly?endeavoring to not make?the same mistake? ? huge positions in credit derivatives ? twice, the WSJ reports. But that?s about as far as the changes go. The CIO will still be able to buy ?asset-backed securities, emerging-markets debt, collateralized debt obligations and troubled corporate debt?. ?That?s an incredibly small correction in response to the CIO?s losses.
The message from Jamie Dimon to traders is clear: our risk management process is fine, keep doing exactly what you were doing before. Just don?t do that (points to ?$2 billion blunder? headline?).
In seeming contrast to his positive view of JPMorgan?s risk management, Dimon had less than kind words for new financial regulation in his testimony last week before the House and Senate. But here?s the weird thing: the two things aren?t actually that different.
In his Senate testimony, Dimon complained that the still to-be enacted Dodd-Frank law was overly complex and vague. Instead, he said he ?[prefers]?a strong, clean regulation system? That?s not what we did?.
This echoes what he said in his annual letter to shareholders: ?[regulatory] complexity and confusion should have?been alleviated, not compounded? As a result of Dodd-Frank, we now have?multiple regulatory agencies with overlapping?rules and oversight responsibilities?. Dimon paired these comments with a?chart that aimed to terrify observers by visualizing regulatory authority using all manner of boxes, colors, lines and (gasp) dotted lines.
Yet here?s Dimon talking about risk management at JPMorgan in his Senate testimony (beginning at the 51-minute mark):
Every business we have has a risk committee. Those risk committees ?and the head of risk in those businesses report to the head of risk at the company and there are periodic conversations between the risk committees and the head of risk of the company and our senior operating group about major exposures we are taking.
There is also oversight from the internal model review committee, the board?s audit, operating and risk committees and various members of senior management on an ad hoc basis. All of which oversee a $2.3 trillion balance sheet. That, in other words, is complexity. I?m sure that if you charted it, ?it would have dotted lines and different colored boxes and all the other things that scare Dimon so much in a regulatory context.
A big reason Dimon prefers his own risk management to new regulation is control. Risk management is largely about transferring control from someone with one set of incentives to someone with a different set of incentives ? from the individual trader, to the desk, to the business unit that oversees that trader. Similarly, regulators function as systemic risk managers, although they have an independent set of incentives.
Dimon?s real problem with regulation, it seems, is that he believes that it?s best that he make a lot of the biggest decisions?personally. That might be bad management, but Dimon has a hard-to-disguise supreme self-confidence. In the case of the CIO, he pushed for increased risk-taking and he got it.
From the public?s perspective, it?s troubling that JPMorgan?s risk management was reportedly being carried out on the whims of a CEO. But to Dimon, that?s presumably a feature, not a flaw. Which is exactly why regulation of this too-big-to-fail bank needs to be at least as robust as JPMorgan?s internal risk management.

It was over a year ago now that we heard about the WiFi Alliance's intention to certify hotspots and simplify the potential for mobile handovers. Now, it's just announced hardware testing of its WiFi-CERTIFIED Passpoint program, which promises to let phones and mobile devices automatically discover and connect to compatible networks. The specification used is the result of cooperation between service providers and equipment manufacturers, with the aim of creating an industry-wise solution for shared WiFi access and roaming agreements. Already hardware from the likes of Cisco, Intel, MediaTek and Qualcomm has received Passpoint certification, leaving the ball in the court of service providers, once testing is complete.

A 2011 post by Steve Buttry has been gnawing a hole in my consciousness for a few weeks now. It?s called ?Newspapers don?t need new ideas; here are lots of ideas for new revenue streams.?
In the post, Steve talks about some of the money-left-on-the-table scenarios in the local news publishing space, but the first one really hit home:
Develop the?must-have driving app for your community.?I first outlined this idea two years ago in my?Blueprint for the Complete Community Connection. I am not aware that any news organization (or anyone else) has tried it yet. Mutter notes that the newspaper ad decline has been most severe in automobile advertising, falling from $5 billion in 2004 to $1.1 billion last year. Auto manufacturers and dealers have built better tools than the newspaper want ads section for selling cars.
Buying a car is a job most people need help with only every few years. It was an easy job to disrupt. But driving is a task many of us do daily, and it presents abundant opportunity. Community news organizations are well-positioned to offer one place where drivers can compare gas prices, buy insurance, find parking spaces, check the traffic, get emergency service, schedule maintenance, rent a car and download coupons for tires and service. And if you develop that app that drivers can use daily, it may also be the best vehicle for advertising auto sales.
That?s an outstanding idea, as far as it goes.?But it got me thinking further. In most local communities around the U.S., the daily commute is done in a car, as Steve notes. But, while this certainly offers a great context-appropriate environment for car- and commute-related news and information, there may be an even bigger opportunity here, one which the march of mobile technology makes so much easier to pull off here in 2012 than even a year or two ago: car-friendly news delivery.
Imagine how useful this could be:
Remember: As of this year, more than half the cell phones in use in the USA are smartphones. Presenting app-like web pages, knowing a user?s location, playing audio and video ? it?s all in there just waiting to be accessed intelligently by users and the local news organizations who love them.
