For Greater Glory, based on a little-known chapter of Mexican history, is a historical military drama about the preservation of religious freedom.

It focuses on the clash between church and state in the late 1920s, at a time when Mexico?s anti-clerical laws of a decade before ? contained in the nation?s 1917 constitution ? were being rigorously enforced and religious rights were being systematically stripped away.

The virtual purging of the Catholic Church was now mandated in Mexico.

Which precipitated the ?Cristero War,? lasting from 1926 to 1929, a people?s rebellion (Cristeros translates as ?soldiers for Christ?) involving devout Mexican Catholics as revolutionaries who arose in opposition to the Mexican government?s persecution of Catholics, pitting an army of devout Catholic rebels, the Cristeros, against powerful government forces, the Federales.

At a time of strong anti-Catholic sentiments, with state law demanding that churches be closed, previously relatively benign encroachments upon religious freedom suddenly developed into much more sinister actions, as bishops and priests were targeted, rounded up, and deported or even killed.

Andy Garcia stars as General Gorostieta, an agnostic who believes in religious freedom.? Retired but restless, the career soldier overcomes his initial reluctance to get involved and, once he and his observant Catholic wife (played by Eva Longoria) experience Mexico?s fall into violent civil war, comes out of retirement to lead the resistance by helping to train the ragtag band of fighters into a viable military force in its opposition to the military machine fighting for repressive Mexican president Plutarco Calles, played by Ruben Blades.

The supporting cast includes Bruce Greenwood as the US ambassador to Mexico, Peter O?Toole as a venerable parish priest, and Bruce McGill as US president Calvin Coolidge.

Debuting director Dean Wright, an accomplished visual effects supervisor, lacks the skill at this point to corral all the elements and hone the production values so that the film?s second hour does more than just play itself out.

The exposition-heavy, grindingly repetitive screenplay by Michael James Love, offering too much speechifying and breadth instead of depth as it explores its themes of faith and liberty, crams plenty of historical data and far too many incidental characters to keep track of into its bloated running time, but fails to generate much emotional power.

While it may not be intended as heavy-handed propaganda, much of it plays that way.

Whether For Greater Glory will resonate with modern audiences who feel that their religious freedom is threatened remains to be seen.

So we?ll rebel against 2 stars out of 4 for the sprawling, R-rated, faith-based war epic, For Greater Glory.? It may be focused on the greater good, but it still falls far short of glory.

But the path Romney and Bush advocate to deal with its shortcomings will cause the patient to flat line and the country to disintegrate into a fallen superpower status by the middle of this century.

This new intimate communion with Susan was the catalyst for reflection and meditation on the nature of one?s relationship with Jesus Christ.? Two titles of the Church have been the primary fuel of my reflections: the Bride of Christ and the Body of Christ.? In recent years, there has been a widespread discovery of Pope John Paul II?s Theology of the Body,which gave credence to my conviction that the nature of our relationship with Jesus is spousal.?

This book is a tribute to those reflections, guided by the Holy Spirit with frequent contact with Sacred Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.? These reflections are augmented by the reality of the emotional and psychological damage that children experience due to an unstable family life that my wife has witnessed as a mental health counselor, our own experience as mentors for engaged couples and our involvement in Engaged Encounter. ?I have brought these reflections into talks and teaching with head bobs of agreement from the participants.? May 25 (Reuters) - Dead silence.

For nearly 20 minutes on the morning of Facebook Inc's trading debut last Friday, the line Nasdaq had opened up to keep traders informed about the social media company's $16 billion IPO had been mute. Well after the stock was supposed to have opened at 11 a.m. New York time, no one from Nasdaq was talking - and there was still no sign of trading.

Finally, at 11:28 a.m., an unidentified person announced that the shares would open in about 2 minutes. Nasdaq also said orders and cancellations were still being processed, according to several sources listening to the call.

Those crucial 20 minutes created confusion that turned into chaos over the next few hours as market makers - the brokers who quote bid and offer prices - struggled to figure out what was happening. They were rebuffed in their attempts to get Nasdaq to halt trading and sort out a growing number of problems.

A lack of communication and, some say, misinformation from Nasdaq may have been central to the failed debut of Facebook's shares. Market makers - crucial to the smooth operation of stock trading - were unsure about their exposure for hours. Investors were in the dark as to whether their trades had gone through, in some cases for days afterwards.

The turmoil caused the four big market-makers for Facebook's stock, Knight Capital Group, Citigroup's Automated Trading Desk, Citadel Securities, and UBS AG to lose around $115 million between them.

"There was very little if any communication from Nasdaq throughout the entire process," said Mark Turner, head of trading at Instinet, another market-maker based in New York. "As a matter of fact, we feel there was miscommunication."

Instinet said it also suffered a loss, though it wasn't specific other than to say it was significantly less than the $30-35 million reported by Knight.

The precise actions taken by Nasdaq officials last Friday are still unclear. Spokespeople for Nasdaq declined numerous requests for comment, referring Reuters to a status alert issued on Monday that outlined some of the problems encountered and some of the steps it took in an attempt to resolve them.

FIST-PUMPING

The Nasdaq call, led by Nasdaq Vice President Todd Golub, according to sources, was scheduled to last 2 hours from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to make sure that the exchange was keeping in close touch with the market. It is a normal event for a big IPO.

However, this call stretched into the late afternoon, as the most anticipated new U.S. stock offering in years turned into one of the ugliest.

The fallout from the events last Friday has become a continuing nightmare for Nasdaq OMX Group, which wooed the social media network for months and openly prides itself on its technology.

The result is another black eye for an exchange industry already suffering because investors not only lost confidence in the financial crisis but through the "flash crash" in May 2010 when $1 trillion in shareholder equity was temporarily wiped out in a matter of minutes.

Nasdaq CEO Bob Greifeld pumped his fist at the symbolic opening bell ceremony at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California next to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg an hour-and-a-half before the company's stock was due to start trading. There were no outward signs then of the problems that were about to unfold back on Wall Street.

At 10:58 a.m., Nasdaq issued a notice that the Facebook opening would be delayed until 11:05 a.m. IPO delays of that nature are not unusual, especially with a massive launch like Facebook.

But then the revised start time passed without an opening trade on the stock. Minutes passed as traders waited. Nasdaq's next communication came at 11:13 a.m., when it noted in a terse emailed message to people who subscribe to the exchange's alerts that Nasdaq is "experiencing a delay in delivering the opening print in Facebook," with no other details.

Meanwhile, market-makers were receiving messages about their orders that later proved to be inaccurate. They say they were told during the period between 11:05 and 11:30 a.m., when the stock finally opened, that orders were still being taken for the opening price.

"Nasdaq representatives were stating right up until 11:29 that they were still accepting orders in Facebook for the open," said Turner of Instinet.

But that wasn't the case. Later, Turner said he was told that orders submitted up to 25 minutes before the opening were either canceled or not submitted into the marketplace until about 1:50 p.m. - more than two hours later. Other market makers received similar messages.

Behind the scenes, the massive order volume was overwhelming Nasdaq's systems.

Orders that were supposed to be processed in 3 milliseconds were taking 5 milliseconds, said one person familiar with exchange operations. This proved to be a major problem: In the extra two milliseconds new orders flooded in, thwarting the system's ability to establish an opening price for the stock and leading to a backup in unprocessed orders.

"This is starting to get bizarre," Wayne Kaufman, an equity market strategist at brokerage John Thomas Financial, said from the firm's trading floor on Wall Street, around 11:15 a.m.

Finally, the decision was made to put through a fix to the systems problem and get the stock trading. That move to a secondary matching engine used the order book as it appeared at 11:11 a.m. - but this meant new orders and changes in orders that came in later did not show up in the opening price. A matching engine is a computer that pairs bids and offers to complete trades.

Eric Noll, Nasdaq's head of transaction services, said in a statement earlier this week that the fix instead led to 2-1/2 hours of uncertainty during which brokers were unable to see the results of their trades.

TRADING HALT?

The stock opened at 11:30:09 a.m. at $42.05 a share. An investor looking at a quote screen might have thought the trouble had ended there. In reality, the problems were about to worsen.

After initially heading to a high of $45, the stock soon began to plunge towards its issue price at $38. Lead underwriter Morgan Stanley stepped in to defend the stock while some others - unsure whether their orders had been processed or not - backed away from trading or decided to sell.

If confidence is undermined at the open, people "pull back because their orders are essentially going into a black hole," said former Nasdaq Vice Chairman David Weild.

Clients were telling their brokers they had not received confirmation of orders - which normally come through in seconds.

"Multiple market makers called Nasdaq and asked them to halt the stock and said, 'You have a problem and it's getting worse,' and their response was, 'The stock is trading normally,'" said an executive at one market-maker.

It is unclear who would have the authority to halt the stock. Nasdaq would not comment on whether it considered such a move.

For market-makers, the chaos was particularly problematic because they didn't know what they and their clients owned, and at what price.

"Should I be selling stock, should I be buying? And what's my price point?" said another official at a market-making firm. "You just don't know, so you wer

The layers or "zones" of the crystals?produced by the interaction of magma, rock, and gas inside a volcano?grow in something like concentric circles (think tree rings). Because the researchers could chemically distinguish the division between one zone and another, they were able to estimate how long it took for each zone to form. "Elements move between one zone and another to maintain equilibrium," Saunders says, "and we know how fast elements move in different crystals, so we can work out how long it took them to reach equilibrium."

This kind of "zoning" occurs because of changes in pressure, temperature, and water content in the volcano?s magma. The upshot is that, depending on the kind of elements found within each zone, the team got a sense of what forces were at play inside the volcano as the zone was made.

By studying St. Helens, for instance, Saunders and colleagues pieced together that increases in seismic activity cause these kinds of crystals to crank up their growth. When magma pulses into a chamber where crystals are already forming, the crystals develop iron-rich cores and magnesium-rich rims. On the other hand, crystals already stuck inside the magma as it enters a new chamber could cool off, causing exactly the opposite kind of zoning?magnesium-rich cores and iron-rich rims.

Today most techniques for monitoring volcanoes are focused on obvious signs, such as small earthquakes and gas releases. Researchers have analyzed crystals before, but this study is one of the first to use those chemical markers to put a time stamp on each zone within the crystal. Connecting crystal formation with a specific time frame could have implications for predicting the next big eruption.

Only not directly, says Daniel Morgan, a professor of volcanology and petrology at the University of Leeds. "It?s still tricky," he says. "Obviously if you?re looking at crystals from erupted volcanoes it?s not going to be a predictive tool." And there?s currently no safe or practical way of taking crystal samples from inside an active volcano. "But now we can start seeing things like the heartbeat or the pulse of a volcano," Morgan says.

By understanding what conditions led to a past eruption, scientists may be able to calculate what phase comes next in the volcano?s life cycle. "We can use these techniques at every volcano, even if they aren?t monitored now," Saunders says. "We can examine the rocks and understand what happened in the past. If it reawakens, we will have a better idea of what to anticipate."

Army wants rapid development of lighter, stronger armor

The U.S. military is plowing $90 million into a university-led research program to rapidly accelerate the development of lighter and stronger materials to better protect soldiers and vehicles.

The same tools that enable the development of this next generation protective gear could, of course, also be used to develop more lethal weapons ? bullets designed to penetrate the toughest materials.

?It is a never-ending escalation on both sides,? Kaushik Bhattacharya, a professor of materials science at the California Institute of Technology, told me Wednesday.

Traditional material development
The Johns Hopkins University led program leverages recent advances in materials science, the computational power to simulate new materials, and high-tech lab tools to build and test physical representations of the stuff.

Until recently, the development of new materials has largely been an observational process ??scientists use a combination of intuition, expertise and experience to modify interesting materials and test them.

Based on those tests, some educated guesses are made for the second round of modifications and tests, and so on. A decade or two later, there?s a new super material that permeates everything from clothing to cars.

The process is similar to traditional plant breeding where crop scientists select lines to grow from one year to the next based on how they look in experimental plots.

Rapid development in plant genetics is allowing crop scientists to select lines based on?genetic markers, allowing them to accelerate the selection process and the release of new varieties.

Materials genome
?There are people who talk about the materials genome,? Bhattacharya said. In the case of materials, instead of an alphabet soup of DNA, there?s a hierarchy of structures.

That is, any given material looks and behaves differently from the nanoscale to the macroscale.

?If I take any piece of material and I look at it under a microscope I see something, if I look at it with a transmission electron microscope I see something else, and if I look at it with a high resolution transmission electron microscope I would see a very different structure,? Bhattacharya explained.

The properties of any material are features drawn from throughout this hierarchy, he added.?

The combination of faster, more powerful computers to do simulations and tools such as high-speed cameras, high-resolution microscopes, and advances in materials synthesis allows materials scientists to better understand and manipulate this hierarchy to design new materials.

The goal of the program is to ?very significantly accelerate the timeframe in which new materials are developed,? Bhattacharya said.

He and his university partners are developing tools that will enable the Army to build the next generation armor (or weapons)?in a development cycle of perhaps a few years compared to a few decades.

And while the military needs and funding make this research possible, the same technology should lead to lighter and stronger materials for use in everything from cars to laptop cases, Bhattacharya noted.

?As often happens, the science is driven by extreme applications but then they permeate everything.?

UN global health agency chief wins 2nd term

GENEVA (AP) ? Dr. Margaret Chan, who has steered the World Health Organization through crises over bird flu and the respiratory SARS bug, has won a second five-year term as its director-general.

The World Health Assembly, which oversees the U.N. health agency, on Wednesday reappointed Chan, during a closed-door session. She ran unopposed.

An agency statement quoted Chan, who has Chinese nationality, as saying she will fight for universal health coverage as "the single most powerful concept that public health has to offer. It is a powerful equalizer."

Chan, a Canadian-trained medical doctor who was health director in Hong Kong before going to work for WHO in 2003, also was quoted as saying that uncertainty over international health funding is a top priority.

Her second term runs until June 30, 2017.
