(AP) ? South Korean police say nearly 40 officers were injured during a rally opposing the ratification of the country's free trade deal with the United States.

Hundreds of protesters have been staging near-daily demonstrations since the ruling party railroaded the U.S. trade deal last week. The protesters believe the deal favors Washington over South Korean workers.

About 2,200 people rallied in Seoul on Saturday evening. Police say some of them punched and kicked officers trying to disperse the crowd.

Police say the violence left 38 officers injured. Most of the injuries were minor, but it was the most police casualties at a single rally since June.

Protesters say they're looking into whether police also used violence during the rally.

Futures rise in electronic trade on Europe hopes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stock futures jumped in early electronic trading on Sunday on the latest round of proposals out of Europe designed to corral the growing euro zone debt crisis.

U.S. stocks suffered their worst week in two months last week. The lack of a credible solution to Europe's debt crisis kept investors away from risky assets and downgrades of Belgium and Hungary added to the gloom.

Germany and France are exploring radical ways to integrate euro zone countries in order to impose tighter budget control. In addition, media reports that the International Monetary Fund was preparing a rescue plan for Italy bolstered sentiment.

S&P 500 futures rose 21 points. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 146 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 26 points.

The U.S. market's seven-day losing streak attracted early short-covering as Asian markets traded higher and the euro rebounded from recent losses. But recent rallies on hopes for a solution have not lasted long.

Last week, the S&P 500 fell 4.7 percent, giving back almost two-thirds of its gains in October, the market's best month in 20 years. The Dow was off 4.8 percent for the week and the Nasdaq fell 5.1 percent.

Arsenal advances, Chelsea slumps

By STUART CONDIE

updated 5:42 p.m. ET Nov. 23, 2011

Arsenal clinched a place in the second round of the Champions League on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, but the Gunners could find themselves the only English club in the knockout stage.

A day after Manchester United and Manchester City both missed the chance to advance, Chelsea conceded a last-minute goal and lost 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen. The Blues risk of missing out on the last 16 for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Leverkusen advanced alongside APOEL, which tied 0-0 at Zenit St. Petersburg to become the first ever Cypriot club to make it past the group stage.

AC Milan rallied twice but Xavi Hernandez scored in the 63rd minute to give defending champion Barcelona a 3-2 win and clinch first place in Group H.

US ranchers: We live in fear along Mexican border

While walking along a dirt road bordering his property, a South Texas farmer complained about living in fear of Mexican traffickers smuggling drugs and illegal immigrants across his land. He would later ask his visitor not to reveal his identity, for his safety and that of his family.

"I'm a citizen of the United States. This is supposedly sovereign soil, but right now it's anybody's who happens to be crossing here," he said. "I'm a little nervous being here right now. Definitely don?t come down here after dark."

The farmer said a federal law enforcement agent told him to buy a bulletproof vest to use while working in his fields. Whenever he goes out to survey his agricultural operations, he always tells his office where he is headed, and he has purchased a high-powered rifle.

"One of the basic points of the federal government is to protect the people of this nation to secure the border, and they're not doing that," he complained.

Story: Cartels using Ariz. mountaintops to spy on cops

The Obama administration and many local officials have said the U.S.-Mexican border is safer than ever and that reports of violence on the American side are wildly exaggerated. But the farmer scoffed at that argument. "I walk this soil every day and have since I was old enough to come out on my own," he said. "In this part of Texas, it is worse than it's ever been."

Moving families to safer ground
A report recently released by the Texas commissioner of agriculture said cross-border violence was escalating. "Fear and anxiety levels among Texas farmers and ranchers have grown enormously during the past two years," the report said, adding that some ?have even abandoned their livelihoods to move their families to safer ground."

Retired U.S. Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey, who served as the U.S. drug czar during the Clinton administration and as an NBC News military analyst, is a co-author of the report. During a recent interview, McCaffrey said that while major cities along the Texas border are "pretty safe," the rural areas between towns are "largely unprotected, and across those areas the (Mexican) cartels are conducting massive movements of illegal drugs and other criminal activity."

Story: Mexican cartels corrupting more US border officials?

Law enforcement agents say they are seeing more aggressive efforts by Mexican traffickers operating in the Rio Grande Valley. In South Texas alone, the traffickers smuggle hundreds of tons of drugs a year into the United States by floating them on rafts across the Rio Grande, then transporting them by car, truck or on foot ? often across private land ? into the United States.

Video: 'Like living in a war zone' (on this page)

The smuggling ?clearly has intimidated U.S. citizen who don't believe they're safe on their own land in their own country," McCaffrey said.

Several Texas congressmen and sheriffs have condemned the report, saying its conclusions are overstated and politically driven. But McCaffrey claims the officials not facing facts.

"I think there is an element of denial," McCaffrey said. "Inside the beltway the senior law enforcement, I think, have fallen in line and said, no, that's right, the U.S. border is the safest place in America, which is errant nonsense."

Ranchers protecting themselves
Veterinarian and rancher Mike Vickers heads the Texas Border Volunteers, a group of about 300 landowners and supporters who work closely with law enforcement officials to track drug and immigrant smugglers entering the U.S. from Mexico and crossing private land. His primary concern, he said, is the safety of farmers and ranchers who have been confronted by armed traffickers.

"A lot of them have been threatened not to call the Border Patrol or law enforcement if they see smuggling going on their property, otherwise they'll be killed or their family members may be killed," he said.

Video: 'It's compromised our lives' (on this page)

During a tour of his land and that of a neighbor, Vickers pointed out numerous hiking trails worn by smugglers and illegal immigrants from around the world. He also showed where many parts of the wire fence had been cut and pulled back. "This is not done by wildlife," he said. "This is done by smugglers and more than likely drug smugglers that have heavy backpacks full of drugs so they can drag the backpack underneath and not have to throw it over the fence."

In order to prove their claims that thousands of smugglers and illegal immigrants are crossing private American land, the Texas Border Volunteers have erected hidden cameras and share the images with state and federal agents. Describing one of the pictures, Vickers said, "This individual's got at least 80, maybe 100 pounds on his back. This is probably marijuana with a canvas covering." Another black and white photograph showed a man hoisting a smaller load. "You know he's carrying at least 40 pounds of drugs in that backpack. We suspect cocaine."

Video: Drug flow from Mexico on the rise

Vickers said that since 2004, about 500 people, mostly illegal immigrants, have perished while on smuggling trips through private property in Brooks County, Texas, alone, where his ranch is located.

A war zone?
Todd Staples, the Texas agriculture commissioner and a candidate for lieutenant governor, argued that many leaders in Washington, D.C., continue to ignore the violence along the border. In a recent article he wrote, "A Webb County rancher checking his cattle is shot at and barely escapes with his life; the suspects are linked to drug cartels. Workers in a Hidalgo County sugarcane field are told by cartel members to stop harvesting the crop 'or else," because the sugarcane provides coverage for cartel coyotes smuggling drugs."

Vickers said he knows ranchers who have moved their families into nearby cities for their protection and have taken other safety measures. "Everyone is packing a weapon and carrying a cell phone with them. and they're crazy if they don't," he said. "This is happening on American soil; this is a war zone here, there's no question about it."

The use of the phrase "war zone" to describe the U.S. side of the border is controversial. The report to the agriculture commissioner states, "Living and conducting business in a Texas border county is tantamount to living in a war zone in which civil authorities, law enforcement agencies as well as citizens are under attack around the clock."

Video: Drug violence comes to Mexican resort (on this page)

Democratic congressmen and some local officials say that conclusion is unfair. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino was recently quoted by the Houston Chronicle as saying, "The border is not in chaos.? And the newspaper quoted Rep. Silvestre Reyes, a Democrat representing El Paso, as calling the claims "political rhetoric" meant to embarrass the Obama administration.

Among ranchers, farmers and law enforcement agents working at the ground level, however, there is considerable agreement that large-scale drug smuggling from Mexico into the United States has been increasing in recent years and that the traffickers are becoming more aggressive. For the farmer too afraid to be identified publicly, it creates a painful dilemma.

"I can't pick up and move this farm; we're tied to the land," he said. "This is the front door to our country. Help us stop it here."

The Extraordinary Syllabi of David Foster Wallace

Wallace doesn?t accept the silent social contract between students and professors: He takes apart and analyzes and makes explicit, in a way that is almost painful, all of the tiny conventional unspoken agreements usually made between professors and their students. ?Even in a seminar class,? his syllabus states, ?it seems a little silly to require participation. Some students who are cripplingly shy, or who can?t always formulate their best thoughts and questions in the rapid back-and-forth of a group discussion, are nevertheless good and serious students. On the other hand, as Prof --- points out supra, our class can?t really function if there isn?t student participation?it will become just me giving a half-assed ad-lib lecture for 90 minutes, which (trust me) will be horrible in all kind of ways.?

Microsoft signs confidentiality pact with Yahoo (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Microsoft Corp has signed a confidentiality agreement with Yahoo Inc, allowing the software giant to take a closer look at Yahoo's business, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Microsoft joins several private equity firms that are also poring over Yahoo's books and operations, as they explore various options for striking a deal with the struggling Internet company.

Yahoo, which fired its chief executive in September, is undergoing a "strategic review," to revamp its business and its stagnant revenue growth.

Private equity firms KKR and TPG Capital have also signed confidentiality agreements with Yahoo, people familiar with the matter previously told Reuters. The firms are looking to potentially buy minority stakes in Yahoo of up to 20 percent, with an eye toward eventually taking over the whole company, the people said.

Silver Lake, another private equity firm, has also signed an nondisclosure agreement with Yahoo, according to the technology blog AllThingsD.

Some private equity firms have balked at signing Yahoo's NDA because of restrictions that would prevent them from forming consortiums, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Reuters reported last month that Microsoft, which has a cash pile of $57 billion, was considering a joint bid for Yahoo.

Microsoft's signing of a nondisclosure agreement with Yahoo occurred "recently," according to the source. The confidentiality agreement between the two companies was earlier reported by the New York Times on Wednesday.

Yahoo and Microsoft declined to comment.

Microsoft last tried buying Yahoo in 2008, offering to pay as much as $47.5 billion, or $33 per share. But Yahoo rebuffed the offer.

After that failed bid, Microsoft struck a 10-year search deal with Yahoo in 2009, that allows Microsoft's technology to power Yahoo's search results and gives Microsoft a 12 percent cut of advertising revenue on Yahoo.

Shares of Yahoo were up 1 cent at $14.98 in early afternoon trading on Wednesday. Microsoft shares were down 0.9 percent at $24.58.

'Grateful to be alive': Teen rescues woman from fire

By Sevil Omer

A 74-year-old Pennsylvania woman is crediting her 14-year-old neighbor with saving her from a burning house -- by using a rickety ladder.

"I'm grateful to be alive," said Charlene McMasters from her hospital?bed on Wednesday. "It was quite an ordeal."

New Castle Assistant Fire Chief David Joseph?commended Justin Ritchie's quick thinking, calling the hero "humble and quiet."

"Even when he was telling me about it, he was shaken and rattled," Joseph said, adding, "The more I listened to the story unfold, the better it got."

Attempts by msnbc.com to contact Ritchie were unsuccessful Wednesday.

Joseph said the incident happened about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, when a fire broke out on the first floor of McMasters' two-story home in western Pennsylvania. Fire officials still do not know what caused the blaze that destroyed her home.

"I don't know what it was, but I remember something woke me up," McMasters said. "I noticed smoke and I rushed to get my handbag and?I went to the window and screamed and screamed."

Ritchie told Joseph he woke up to his dog barking and then heard a woman shouting.

"He went out and saw this woman hanging out of the window... It was Charlene and her house was on fire," Joseph said.

Ritchie spotted an old wooden ladder that had been abandoned next to McMasters' house and made a dash to the house. The teen set it against the burning structure, warning McMasters that her escape route was unstable and rickety, Joseph said.

McMasters said she didn't care. She took two steps down and the ladder broke.

"I came crashing down and fell a long way," she said.

McMasters said she suffered broken ribs from the 10-foot fall, but that was OK. She was being released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon and planned to spend Thanksgiving Day with her children at their homes in Pennsylvania.

"I got a walker, a good therapy session and I will heal," McMasters said.

"I can't thank this young man enough. I don't know what would have happened had he not come to my rescue."

Brazil official sees $28 million fine for Chevron (AP)

SAO PAULO ? Brazil is expected to fine Chevron nearly $28 million for an ongoing offshore oil spill, Rio de Janeiro state's environment secretary said Monday.

Carlos Minc said the national government will also ask Chevron to pay for damages caused by the Atlantic spill.

"We believe the accident could've been avoided. There was an environmental crime," Minc told Globo TV and other Brazilian media. "They hid information and their emergency team took almost 10 days to start acting."

Chevron Corp. officials have accepted responsibility for the spill but reject accusations they did not notify local authorities quickly enough or properly manage cleanup operations.

Minc said he considers the fine lenient, but it's the maximum allowed under current Brazilian law.

The fine has not been officially announced because the government was still waiting for a final report by local investigators.

Minc said officials would also analyze imposing further fines on Chevron based on state laws in Rio de Janeiro, and that Brazil's National Petroleum Agency could even consider banning the company from operating in Brazil for a limited time.

"There was negligence," Minc said. "Rio will not allow any kind of environmental impunity."

He said Chevron, based in San Ramon, California, will be expected to pay about $5.6 million in reparation for the damage to the environment.

"We are still calculating the costs," he said. "Part of that money we want to use to increase the monitoring of our ocean."

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was expected to meet with the national environmental minister and its mines and energy minister later Monday to discuss the oil spill and determine the government's actions.

The National Petroleum Agency said more than 110,000 gallons (416,300 liters) of crude oil may have reached the ocean floor since the lead began on Nov 7.

George Buck, chief operating officer for Chevron's Brazilian division, said Sunday the spill occurred because Chevron underestimated the pressure in an underwater reservoir.

Chevron was drilling an appraisal well about 230 miles (370 kilometers) off the northeastern coast of Rio de Janeiro when the leak started as crude rushed upward and eventually escape into the surrounding seabed.

The oil has leaked through at least seven narrow fissures, all within 160 feet (50 meters) of the well head on the ocean floor.

Eighteen boats work on a rotating basis on the slick, with a varying number of vessels working simultaneously, Buck said.

The leak is a test for Brazil as huge offshore oil finds have been announced recently, with estimates they could hold at least 50 billion barrels of oil.

Brazil has had bigger oil spills. In 2000, crude spewed from a broken pipeline at the Reduc refinery in Rio de Janeiro's scenic Guanabara Bay, dumping at least 344,400 gallons (1.3 million liters) into the water. Just a few months later, more than 1 million gallons (3.8 million liters) of crude burst from a pipeline operated by state-controlled oil company Petrobras into a river in southern Brazil.

Brazil's worst oil disaster was in 1975, when an oil tanker from Iraq dumped more than 8 million gallons of crude into the bay and caused Rio's famous beaches to be closed for nearly three weeks.

Deputies stand before interim President Fouad Mbazaa's speech during the inaugural session of the elected constituent assembly on November 22.

Tunisia entered a new era of democracy on November 22 with the inaugural session of its democratically elected constituent assembly, 10 months after a popular uprising ended years of dictatorship.?

As the country that set off the wave of pro-democracy movements that engulfed the Arab region, Tunisia's efforts to build a democracy are being closely watched around the world.

The Islamist Ennahda Party won the most seats in elections on October 25 and partnered with the liberal Congress for the Republic and the left-of-center Ettakatol Party to form a ruling coalition and divide up the top posts between them.

The mother of Mohamed Bouazizi, the fruitseller whose self-immolation sparked the revolution, attended the opening session of the assembly.

"I'm an optimist. I wish success for my country and I hope that the parties will work together and avoid problems," Manoubia Bouazizi told?Reuters last month.?"That's my message to them."

"I hope they are worthy of the loss that I suffered."

A new network of observatories aims to take ecological science to the continental scale in the next 30 years. The National Science Foundation?sponsored network, called the National Ecological Observatory Network, or NEON, will link 20 field stations selected to provide data from 20 distinct U.S. biomes as well as 40 portable stations that can be moved from site to site. NEON will monitor how large-scale problems such as climate change, pollution and urban sprawl affect ecosystems as diverse as the Great Lakes and Hawaii.

Construction needed to link all the stations will begin soon in the Mountain West and Northeast, including monitoring towers that will characterize each site. The full network should be in place and operational by 2016.

View a slide show of the different regions NEON will study.

In the near-term, sensors scattered in field and stream will begin to collect regional data in standardized ways that can then be compared nationwide. Readings will range from simple rain gauges to sophisticated measurements of air pollution levels. Samples will be taken of organisms ranging from microbes to ground beetles. And all measurements will be standardized to allow rigorous comparison of the effects of big environmental problems on different eco-regions. That is more ambitious and potentially more scientifically fruitful than the previous such foundation project?the Long Term Ecological Research Network begun in 1980?which largely answered specific questions about impacts in a specific region, albeit in a way that failed to allow comparisons with other sites.

Ultimately, NEON hopes to show how humans can maintain our quality of life on this planet by better understanding how ecosystems deliver vital services?clean water, air, pollination?and respond to our own impacts on these systems. In essence, NEON will light up the night of our own ecological ignorance.

Ozone from rock fracture could serve as earthquake early warning

Friday, November 18, 2011

Researchers the world over are seeking reliable ways to predict earthquakes, focusing on identifying seismic precursors that, if detected early enough, could serve as early warnings.

New research, published this week in the journal Applied Physics Letters, suggests that ozone gas emitted from fracturing rocks could serve as an indicator of impending earthquakes. Ozone is a natural gas, a byproduct of electrical discharges into the air from several sources, such as from lightning, or, according to the new research, from rocks breaking under pressure.

Scientists in the lab of Ra?l A. Baragiola, a professor of engineering physics in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science set up experiments to measure ozone produced by crushing or drilling into different igneous and metamorphic rocks, including granite, basalt, gneiss, rhyolite and quartz. Different rocks produced different amounts of ozone, with rhyolite producing the strongest ozone emission.

Some time prior to an earthquake, pressures begin to build in underground faults. These pressures fracture rocks, and presumably, would produce detectable ozone.

To distinguish whether the ozone was coming from the rocks or from reactions in the atmosphere, the researchers conducted experiments in pure oxygen, nitrogen, helium and carbon dioxide. They found that ozone was produced by fracturing rocks only in conditions containing oxygen atoms, such as air, carbon dioxide and pure oxygen molecules, indicating that it came from reactions in the gas. This suggests that rock fractures may be detectable by measuring ozone.

Baragiola began the study by wondering if animals, which seem ? at least anecdotally ? to be capable of anticipating earthquakes, may be sensitive to changing levels of ozone, and therefore able to react in advance to an earthquake. It occurred to him that if fracturing rocks create ozone, then ozone detectors might be used as warning devices in the same way that animal behavioral changes might be indicators of seismic activity.

He said the research has several implications.

"If future research shows a positive correlation between ground-level ozone near geological faults and earthquakes, an array of interconnected ozone detectors could monitor anomalous patterns when rock fracture induces the release of ozone from underground and surface cracks," he said.

"Such an array, located away from areas with high levels of ground ozone, could be useful for giving early warning to earthquakes."

He added that detection of an increase of ground ozone might also be useful in anticipating disasters in tunnel excavation, landslides and underground mines.

Asia stocks fall on weak data, Europe debt jitters

(AP) ? Asian stock markets headed lower Monday as a change of government in debt-laden Spain and Singapore's warning of a sharp growth slowdown underlined the challenges facing the world economy.

Benchmark crude fell below $98 per barrel and the dollar slipped against the euro and the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.1 percent to 8,365.04 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng was 1.9 percent lower at 18,141.22. South Korea's Kospi index dropped 1.3 percent to 1,816.04. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.8 percent to 4,145.30.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China were also lower.

Market jitters were evident a day after Spain voted in a new government ? the third time in as many weeks that Europe's debt crisis has toppled an administration. Governments in financially troubled Greece and Italy have also fallen.

Spain dumped its ruling Socialist government Sunday for the conservative leadership of Mariano Rajoy, who inherits an economy wracked by debt and an unemployment nightmare ? which at more than 21 percent is the highest among the 17 nations that use the euro.

Rajoy also must lower Spain's soaring borrowing costs with deficit-reducing measures while preventing an already moribund economy from heading into a double-dip recession.

Adding to pessimism, Singapore on Monday warned that its economy will likely suffer a sharp slowdown next year as export demand from developed countries wanes. Because of its high reliance on trade, Singapore is often a bellwether for the rest of Asia.

Japan, meanwhile, said its exports fell for the first time in three months in October, eroded by a strong yen and a sputtering global economy.

Companies that depend heavily on exports fell broadly. Mazda Motor Corp. lost 3.7 percent, Honda Motor Corp. fell 2.7 percent, and Panasonic Corp. lost 2.2 percent.

Energy and resource shares were hit hard by the uncertain outlook for the global economy. Hong Kong-listed China National Offshore Oil Corp., known as CNOOC, fell 3.6 percent. China Coal was down 4 percent while Energy Resources of Australia lost 2.1 percent. Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. fell 2.1 percent.

Gains were muted on Wall Street on Friday. While the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators rose more than Wall Street analysts were expecting ? a sign that the economy may pick up in the coming months ? many investors were cautious as a key Congressional committee remained deadlocked on ways to cut the U.S. budget deficit.

A bipartisan panel must agree on making at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts by Wednesday. If the committee fails and Congress takes no other action, automatic spending cuts will take effect beginning in 2013. Economists worry that a deadlocked Congress will erode business confidence and slow the already fragile U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.2 percent to close at 11,796.16. The Standard and Poor's 500 lost less than 0.1 percent to 1,215.65. The Nasdaq composite slid 0.6 percent to 2,572.50.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was up 8 cents at $97.75 a barrel in electornic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Monday. The contract fell $1.41 to finish at $97.41 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3523 from $1.3518 late Friday in New York. The dollar weakened to 76.84 yen from 76.97 yen.

Sierra Club leader departs amid discontent over group's direction

The leader of the Sierra Club, one of the nation's most influential environmental groups, has stepped down after 18 years amid discontent that the group founded by 19th Century wilderness evangelist John Muir has strayed from its core principles.

The departure of Carl Pope, 66, chairman of the club and a member for more than 40 years, comes as the nonprofit group faces declining membership, internal dissent, well-organized opponents, a weak economy and forces in Congress trying to take the teeth out of environmental regulations.

He has been replaced by Michael Brune, 40, a veteran of smaller activist groups, who has pledged to concentrate on grass-roots organizing, recruit new members and focus on issues such as coal-fired power plants. "We have different approaches," Brune said of his relationship with his predecessor.

Pope said he will leave his position as chairman to devote most of his time to "revitalizing the manufacturing sector" by working with organized labor and corporations. That emphasis caused schisms in the club, most notably when he hammered out a million-dollar deal with household chemical manufacturer Clorox to use the club's emblem on a line of "green" products, and more recently with its support of utility-scale solar arrays in the Mojave Desert, the type of place the club made its reputation protecting.

"I'm a big-tent guy, " Pope said in an interview in the group's San Francisco headquarters. "We're not going to save the world if we rely only on those who agree with the Sierra Club. There aren't enough of them. My aim is getting it right for the long term. I can't get anything accomplished if people think: 'This guy is not an honest broker. He's with the Sierra Club.' "

Pope led the Sierra Club's efforts to help protect 10 million acres of wilderness, including California's Giant Sequoia National Monument, and brought litigation challenging the right of then-Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force to secretly hash out energy policy with major oil companies. Pope also co-authored California's Prop 65, which allowed citizens to sue polluters if they failed to comply with the law. More recently, he helped block 150 proposed coal-fired power plants.

But his tenure was marked by controversial decisions that revealed the costs and political consequences behind the brand of environmental activism he practiced. Acrimony remains over the 2008 Clorox deal, which brought the club $1.3 million over the four-year term of the contract, according to Pope.

Many of the rank and file felt Pope diminished the role of chapter experts and volunteers who have sustained the organization since Muir first championed California's Sierra Nevada and an expanding list of American wild places, favoring paid staffers and attorneys and chumming with political players such as United Steel Workers President Leo Gerard and attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The longest-serving executive director in club history, Pope pulled the group closer to large donors, and re-focused efforts toward fighting climate change over narrowly focused campaigns to protect wild places. The group's unflagging support for utility-scale solar development, which threatens such species as the desert tortoise, captures the philosophical shift that occurred under Pope.

"If we don't save the planet, there won't be any tortoises left to save," Pope said.

The 66-year-old Harvard graduate acknowledged that big challenges await his successor, who will manage a budget of nearly $100 million and a staff of about 600. Pope earned a salary of $207,374 in 2010, the last year for which figures were available.

The Sierra Club leadership, which is appointed by members, sought to minimize the issue of philosophical differences between Pope and Brune, and focus on a smooth transition.

"We're fortunate that the two of them work so well together, and that Carl has done such a great job of passing the torch," said Sierra Club Board President Robin Mann, who praised Pope's "groundbreaking work," including developing alliances with labor that "put us in a whole different position in terms of influence."

Brune, who has undergraduate degrees in economics and finance, previously worked for the Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace, groups known for scrappy and theatrical anti-corporate tactics. That background emerges in his view of the group's relationship with Clorox, a company that has had a checkered environmental past.

"We're done with Clorox," Brune said in an interview. "The contract with Clorox runs out in December, and by mutual consent it will not be renewed."

"I'm not going to bring any deals to the board that would negatively impact the Sierra Club brand," he added. "Nor will we associate with any company that has a green product line and also produces products that can damage the environment in ways they are not willing to address."

Pope had blunt words for critics of the Clorox decision: "I could predict with 90% certainty where somebody would stand on the Clorox controversy by knowing one bit of demographic data. The people in the Sierra Club who had significant concerns were between 50 and 68. They were people who cut their teeth on the counterculture greening-of-America-anti-business stuff of the 1970s."

That assessment rankled Brune, who will have to address a decline in paid membership, from 714,000 in 2005 to 616,000 today.

"Over the next year we will be adding a million members and supporters," Brune said. "In order to get off coal, one of the biggest sources of greenhouse emissions, we'll need an army of well-trained volunteers, as well as lobbyists and lawyers. Our members will be finding new members as tenacious and devoted to finding solutions as they are. We'll be activating and inspiring everyday people who genuinely care about the environment."

That kind of talk "is refreshing," said Joan Taylor, a Sierra Club activist of 40 years.

"We desert activists felt the club had abandoned the desert in the name of ramping up utility-scale renewable energy projects," Taylor said. "We don't need the club beholden to big labor and big corporations. That's a huge error in judgment. Eventually, it can't help but affect what you can say and what you can do."

Ed Mainland, co-chair of Sierra Club California's energy-climate committee said: "I'm hopeful there will be a change of course. We shouldn't be in bed with industry and utilities. Big donors start dictating policy."

Pope agreed, to a point.

"The biggest source of legitimate unhappiness," Pope said, "has been that after 9/11 the Sierra Club and all other membership organizations started getting less and less individual donations ? so we became more reliant on money that came with strings. That's the reality of the world."

The club has received hefty financial contributions over the last two decades, including more than $100 million from clean-energy investor David Gelbaum. In July, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's main charitable organization announced it would donate $50 million over four years to the club's campaign to shut down coal-fired power plants.

Pope acknowledged that many people in the organization disagreed with his fund-raising philosophy. "But my view and the view of the board," Pope said, "was that accepting some loss of flexibility for some increase in clout was a risk worth taking."

Who is worth more: Ashton or Demi?

Two and a half is not just a number in Ashton Kutcher's successful TV show, but it's how many more zeros he has in his bank account than soon-to-be ex-wife Demi Moore.

Here's how an expert from Forbes breaks down the finances of the divorcing duo exclusively to E! News.

MORE: Demi Moore Divorcing Ashton Kutcher "With Great Sadness"

"As painful as this is to say, Ashton has great earning potential from here on out, and Demi Moore does not," says Dorothy Pomerantz, the magazine's L.A. bureau chief. "Because of 'Two and a Half Men,' he is earning close to $700,000 an episode, and if his show goes into syndication he will earn more from that. Having a hit show gives you amazing earning potential."

Forbes estimates that Kutcher has made roughly $7 million so far this year from "Two and a Half Men," plus another $2 million from his movies, another $1 million from his restaurants and another $1 million from residuals of "That '70s Show" reruns.

Pomerantz says Ashton's investments in tech companies haven't given him significant earnings yet, but have potential for big returns down the line.

The future may be looking bright financially for Ashton, but it could only be getting worse for Demi.

"Maybe we are going to see her build back up her portfolio, but it's hard for women at her age [Moore turned 49 a week ago], there's just no way around that," said Pomerantz. "That's a scarlet letter on your forehead. She's too pretty to play the older mom roles."

Per Forbes estimates, Moore still gets residuals from her movies, and her lucrative endorsement deal with Ann Taylor brings in an estimated $2 million-$3 million per year, putting her somewhere close to $5 million for the year.

Kutcher meanwhile has never made Forbes' Celebrity 100, but he has a good chance of making it next year.

"With the Celebrity 100 we look at earnings and fame," said Pomerantz. "The lowest earners on our list earn about $9 million a year, but they have to have a significant amount of fame too. We do the list in May, but Ashton wasn't on 'Two and a Half Men' at that point, so that's $7 million that he didn't have."

A yearly income of $12 million-$13 million would put Kutcher on the Forbes Top 100 Celebrity list next to individuals like Tina Fey, who earned $13 million in 2010, and Kate Moss and Eva Longoria, who each earned $14 million.

Occupy Harlem's Subway Protests Not As Disruptive As Predicted (VIDEO)

NEW YORK -- On Thursday morning, it was widely reported in the media that Occupy Wall Street was planning to shut down New York City's subway system. The protesters planned to stage rallies in subway stations across the five boroughs, and many feared that further crowding in the subways during busy afternoon hours would anger the city's commuters and do little to affect the 1 percent.

The Huffington Post went to Harlem's 125th street station to see one of the protests, and found that commuters -- instead of being irritated -- largely supported the movement.

Hot new sports cars tout green credentials

By Paul Eisenstein

Porsche via AP

The new Porsche 911 Carrera goes from zero to 60 in a screaming 4 seconds, but the maker is also promising improved fuel economy.

Considering the endless congestion on Southern California roadways it?s little?wonder the region has become the nation's largest market for hybrids and other ?green? machines. Yet the greater Los Angeles region is also the world?s single largest market for high-performance products like the Porsche 911 making its North American debut at this week?s Los Angeles Auto Show.

The seventh-generation Porsche 911 is already winning early raves. The iconic car is?slightly longer, lower and wider than previous versions and?delivers?significant improvement in the numbers sports car fans like ? starting with the 350-horsepower performance of the base 911 Carrera and 400 hp of the Carrera S.? The?new model?launches from 0 to 60 in just over 4 seconds, with the more powerful Carrera S reaching a top speed of 189 miles per hour.

Yet Porsche officials are also promoting another impressive figure:?Preliminary testing suggests the 2013 911 will get an estimated 15 percent better mileage than the outgoing model thanks to a variety of steps,? taken to improve engine efficiency, such as direct injection. Porsche engineers also focused on reducing aerodynamic drag and lowering tire friction.

And Porsche isn?t alone.? While the?Los Angeles show will see?the launch of a number of new luxury and high-performance products, many are delivering the sort of fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures that just a few years ago would have been impressive on a compact economy car.

?Fuel economy is becoming more and more important in every segment of the market,? said August Achleitner, director of the 911 product line.

TheDetroitBureau.com

The new Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG improves fuel economy through an automatic stop-start feature.

The new 911 shares a groundbreaking new technology with another high-performance model debuting at L.A.?s Staples Center, a system commonly referred to as Auto Stop/Start.? The 2013 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG pumps out as much as 550 horsepower with its optional performance package but?delivers an estimated 16 mpg in the EPA's combined city/highway test ? a surprisingly good figure for a large, high-performance SUV.

One way it gets there is by automatically shutting off its engine when the vehicle would otherwise waste fuel idling.?When the driver?s foot lifts off the brake the engine seamlessly restarts.?The technology is expected to become commonplace over the coming decade after starting?out in the luxury market where motorists are more willing to pay the premium ? and where the improvements in fuel economy are most noticeable.

The annual L.A. show is one of the biggest events of its kind in the U.S. and for good reason, considering the size of the local Southern California car market.

Jaguar/Land Rover will use the event not only to reveal the Indian-owned company?s super-high-performance Jaguar XKR-S sports car but also to gauge consumer reaction to a trio of concept vehicles -- including a pair of prototypes that could eventually morph into a new Land Rover Defender, as well as the Jaguar CX-16 a sports car concept bearing more than a hint of the design DNA of the legendary Jaguar E-Type.

The Land Rover model, if it goes into production, will almost certainly feature an optional high-mileage diesel as well as a hybrid-electric driveline.? Jaguar is studying an even more advanced gas-electric powertrain option for the CX-16, according to the maker?s global brand boss Adrian Hallmark.

The plug-in hybrid system ?would have three different modes,? he explains, noting it could handle daily commuting on battery power alone, operate as a more conventional hybrid-electric vehicle or deliver an outsized performance punch.?In that mode its lithium-ion driveline would act like an electric turbocharger ? briefly kicking in about 90 horsepower and several 100 pound-feet of torque on top of the 380 horsepower of its base V6.

There are several reasons why luxury and high-performance automakers are so keenly interested in electric propulsion.? A new Consumer Reports study shows that 93 percent?of?American motorists are demanding better mileage ? and research shows that even the most affluent drivers are looking for improved fuel economy.? Meanwhile tough new regulations here and abroad will require significant improvements in mileage and sharp cuts in CO2 emissions.

That?s led BMW to launch an entirely new brand-within-a-brand dedicated to battery propulsion systems.? The new i3 city car and i8 performance car show the range of options possible for alternative power.? The two models made their European preview at the Frankfurt Motor Show and will now make their first appearance in the U.S.

The L.A. Auto Show isn?t entirely green.?There?ll be a significant presence by more conventional muscle cars and exotics, including the Mustang-based 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, the first American muscle car to break the 200 mph barrier.?Chevrolet will fire back with the unveiling of the most powerful Camaro ragtop ever, the Camaro ZL1 Convertible. And Dodge will spin some wheels with the Challenger SRT8 392 Yellowjacket Edition.

But few products will be able to avoid the green revolution, even in the upper reaches of the luxury market.? The new Cadillac XTS will debut in L.A. this week with a conventional gas engine but the premium luxury sedan, Caddy?s new flagship, will eventually get a hybrid driveline, as well.? The General Motors brand recently won approval for a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid ? which may be on the Cadillac stand for the 2012 L.A. Auto Show.

You've heard a ton about electric cars being the future of the auto industry, but the real growth is coming from internal combustion engine vehicles, reports CNBC's Phil LeBeau.
